Movie Summary The Lost Battalion Essay Example For Students
Movie Summary The Lost Battalion Essay The movie The Lost Battalion is a movie about a battalion in 1918 that was sent out to battle during World War 1. Major Charles White Wittlesey is assigned by General Robert Alexander to lead his troops to the Argonne Forest with five hundred men where they face severally bloody battle with the Germans forces. However, the forces were supposed to be given support through the flanks retreat and communications with the head quarter of the 77th American Division are cut. Major Wittlesey and holds his position with his men, mostly, Irish, Polish, Italian and Jewish immigrants from New York which are surround and outnumber by the German army; with no food, water, ammunitions and medical supplies. In this movie the main characters all developed a friendship for example Private Bob Yoder and Private Lipasti connected with the fact that they both volunteered for the battalion which lead to Yoder inviting Lipasti to visit his home town. Experiences was a symbolism that was a reoccurring aspect throughout the movie. Experience was a problem for Major Wittlesey, in the beginning of the movie he realizes that he will need every man he can get so he could push through the German forces. Wittlesey gains a great number of inexperienced dough boys straight from the basic training whoââ¬â¢ve never seen an actually battle before. Having men unaccustomed to a military battle became a burden because it slowed down the battalion causing more deaths then had could have been with experienced soldiers. For an example, in the movie Major Wittlesey had to help a soldier (Find name) during mid-battle reload his gun, which could have been cost Major Wittlesey his own life. This is an important scene because it shows the struggle the Americans had to overcome, forcing them to learn from their mistakes throughout the battalion and also fight their hardest with all the obstacles they must face. The war affected American severely due to the lack of medical supplies, they were blinded by gas bombs and torched with flamethrower, killed by the Germans and either killed or injured by their own channels. While trying to help their wounded they came across of not having any medical supplies so they couldnââ¬â¢t treat their wounded without reusing medical bandages. Which in some retrospect will leave them traumatized with what we call ââ¬Å"shell shock and/or PTSDâ⬠by the things that they had seen in combat. The Lt. Teichmoeller who was in charge of firing the channel emotional broke down because he had gave permission to fire channel which landed on his troops. The ethnicity background in the lost battalion showed the integrations of different ethnic who are accustomed to hating each other finding their way of burying the hatchet in war. The American and German headquarters had no respect for on another but Major Henrich Prinz understand how bad the war was becoming offered medical the American food and medical aid if the Americans surrender. The American soldiers and the German soldiers did not hate each other they were following orders. The troop on the Western front realized that their troops had been through purgatory which is why they needed to find them so they could start to extract their soldiers from battle safety. Weaponry in this war weââ¬â¢re very complex, Germanââ¬â¢s had their typeââ¬â¢s guns while Americanââ¬â¢s had theirs. During this war Americans were running out of bullets for their guns and therefore they took the dead of the Germans guns to fight against the Germans in the war. There were different types of guns in this war there were M1917 Revolvers that was used by Lt. Leak, Flat mainspring used by Major Wittlesey, Colt M1911 used by Captain Nelson Holderman and Captain George McMurtry, Luger P08 carried by German officer who shakes hands with an American. Rifles were used by the American, Mauser Gewehr 1898 were guns that German snipers, Germans also used Maxim MG08, Flammenwerfer M. 16 which are flamethrowers. .u161cf2c8c93a206b0ee944e0141cbe02 , .u161cf2c8c93a206b0ee944e0141cbe02 .postImageUrl , .u161cf2c8c93a206b0ee944e0141cbe02 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u161cf2c8c93a206b0ee944e0141cbe02 , .u161cf2c8c93a206b0ee944e0141cbe02:hover , .u161cf2c8c93a206b0ee944e0141cbe02:visited , .u161cf2c8c93a206b0ee944e0141cbe02:active { border:0!important; } .u161cf2c8c93a206b0ee944e0141cbe02 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u161cf2c8c93a206b0ee944e0141cbe02 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u161cf2c8c93a206b0ee944e0141cbe02:active , .u161cf2c8c93a206b0ee944e0141cbe02:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u161cf2c8c93a206b0ee944e0141cbe02 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u161cf2c8c93a206b0ee944e0141cbe02 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u161cf2c8c93a206b0ee944e0141cbe02 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u161cf2c8c93a206b0ee944e0141cbe02 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u161cf2c8c93a206b0ee944e0141cbe02:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u161cf2c8c93a206b0ee944e0141cbe02 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u161cf2c8c93a206b0ee944e0141cbe02 .u161cf2c8c93a206b0ee944e0141cbe02-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u161cf2c8c93a206b0ee944e0141cbe02:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Technology in the Movie Gattaca EssayDuring the movie the Americans had no ammunition for their guns so they used the German guns. In my opinion this is far from a Hollywood movie: It clearly demonstrates the futility and horror of the attacks that the ordinary infantry soldier had to go through. It doesnt leave out the fact that the generals only had few respect for peoples lives and it also shows that many mistakes were made like bombing the own troops. It all happened in reality and it is all shown very well in this movie. I would recommend this as an historical film because its shows a clear view of the 1918 battalion in WW1. The battle scenes are very gone and realistic, in war of trenches and bayonet and the actors had a difficult task of trying to act fearful of their lives but yet hopeful of the accomplishing their lives. The Americans fought the Germans violently for five days without food, water, medical supplies and a very limited supply of ammunition. If it was not for the strength of those soldiers to overcome impossible conditions, the entire force may have been obliterated in five day siege. After the five day siege many soldiers earned awards.

Question: Discuss About The Entrepreneurship Effective Small Business? Answer: Introduction The idea which is invented to introduce a new business in the market is known as business plan. This is the official term and under this term various processes are included such as planning, forecasting, raising funds, opting advertisement and promotional techniques, etc. Apart from these components, business plan also includes the goals and the objectives set up by the management of the organization. Under this report, New Look Salons business plan will be discussed which will be introduced in the New York City of United States of America. Due to the prime location of this city, organization has planned to adopt various strategies through which all the tasks of new business could be could be executed in an appropriate manner. The major objective of the organization is to provide adequate salon services to the medium class people whose earnings are not enough to consume salon services. Hence, the prices of the services offered under New Look Salon will be set in relevance with the me dium level income group. Vision and Mission of the New Look Salon Every organization develops their goals and the objectives to survive in the dynamic business environment. The basic motive behind developing these goals is that, organization set targets for them to reach to the targets in a particular period of time and if those targets are achieved adequately within the set time period then it will be marked as successful organization. Apart from this, every organization set ups their business with an assumption of long run survival and this assumption is also included in the mission of the organization (Lee, Barker Mouasher, 2013). The same missions are being developed by the management of the New Look Salon. While their some objectives and goals differ from general organizations, rather operating for profits, New Look Salon has decided to provide experience of salon services to the people who generally do not opt for salon. Despite being this motive, organization needs to adopt an effective pricing strategy through which organization could be able to recover its cost of production as well as the other expenses of the salon because operating the functionalities in the New York City are very expensive (Compact, 2015). Apart from these missions, salons management has also invented various ways through which those missions could be easily achieved. While developing the visions in order to meet with the mission set up by the management of the New Look Salon, appropriate actions are being taken. Company sets vision in order to achieve the future objectives and it is set up from the perception of achieving adequate growth. It is a road map through which organization could reach to the desired destination set up by the management of the New Look Salon (Yoon, Lee Chang, 2017) Business and industry profile The major activity of a salon is hairdressing services, make-up, cosmetic services and massage and therapy services. These services can be consumed by ladies as well as by men. Under this industry, organization needs to provide adequate training to its staff members in order to deliver the adequate services to its consumers. As this industry serves the services in relevance with the human body and a small mistake could harm them. Hence, training measures and using quality materials are very crucial aspect of this industry. Appointment of the staff is also done on the basis of knowledge of the candidate in relevance with the salon services. Qualification does not impact much on these types of jobs but talent plays important role. For every part of the body, specialist is appointed and amongst them, hair stylist, skin specialist, etc. person are appointed in order to provide adequate types of services which are offered under a salon. New Look Salon will not be able to appoint separate person for all every unique service. But they can appoint an experienced candidate who should be capable enough to serve the consumers with adequate type of services (Martin, 2015). Business strategy Business strategy is the procedure through which organization could be able to achieve its desired goals and the objectives. In relation with the scenario of New Look Salon, the major objective is to provide salon services to the medium class income people and apart from them, anyone can avail the services, there will be no restriction (Scholes, 2015). Under this method, appropriate and effective strategies will be adopted in order to implement those in the workplace of New Look Salon in order to achieve the adequate amount of goals for the organization. Apart from this, business strategy of the New Look Salon will be efficient enough because they have planned to operate their functionalities in the most expensive city of the world. Hence, in order to achieve the desired goals for the organization, strategies opted by the management needs to be efficient as well as effective enough to reach to the desired destination (Chang, 2016). Products and Services Under New Look Salons premises, unique types of services as well as beauty products are available. In order to attain the goals for the organization, New Look Salon has adopted the adequate quality standards through which customers can satisfy their requirements in relevance with the salon. Apart from salon products that will be used for grooming the customers, they are selling the beauty products through which consumers can treat them at their homes only. Beauty products such as face creams, body lotion, hair serum, etc. are provided to the consumers. New Look Salons some services are skin treatment, bridal and grooms packages, hair treatment, massage services, spa, etc. are provided and at the cheapest price in order to attain the customers attention. This will also help them to grow in their industry as well as the chances for the expansion of the business arises (Hoskisson, 2009). Through these products and the services provided by the salon to their consumers, a trust level against the organization is built in the consumers. Along with the trust level, it also helps the organization to attain the competitive advantage in the dynamic business environment (Glowik Smyczek, 2011). Marketing Strategy The major marketing will be done through the electronic medium of the promotion and the advertisement because these are the trending methods as well as it also helps the organization to cover more market area in relevance with other platforms of the promotion. Apart from the electronic medium of promotion, organization will also adopt the paper medium for promoting their business in the domestic market. As the products and the services will mainly be consumed by the local public and especially by the medium class income group and this is because they will promote their salon with this tag line only. In promotional campaign of the New Look salon, price list will also be displayed in order to more number of consumers. Despite being in the New York City which is known for being expensive, they are providing salon services at reasonable rates and this will be the key aspect through which they can attain more number of consumers (Gruca Rego, 2009). Apart from this, they have also included the discount and offer strategy in their marketing strategy in order to promote their salon in the market. On taking the membership for one year, organization will provide an additional discount of 10% and all the services consumed by the customer in that one year will also be charged at 5% discount. This offer will be for a certain period of time and this is specially added in the marketing strategy of the salon to attract more number of people and to gain competitive advantage in the competitive business environment in New York City (Farahmand, 2011). Location and Layout Location of the New Look salon is quite attractive as well as it has the capability to gain more number of consumers. New York is the place where large number of public prefers to adopt salon services irrelevance to their income, age, etc. But normal and medium income group of people prefers to opt for reasonable salon while high standard people prefer to consume the services of high class salons. In relation with the New Look Salon, their location and the layout of the salon are quite attractive as well as reliable. It will be capable enough to gain number of consumers as well as to beat its competitors strategies. New Look Salon will operate its functionalities from the Rockefeller Centre which is known as the iconic midtown business complex of New York City. This location is amongst the most attractive and famous places of the New York while it will also be easily reachable for most of the public (Drummond, Ensor Ashford, 2012). These are some of the strategies which will be considered as the location and the layout services of the organization and these are crucial element of business plan especially for a new business idea. Apart from this, infrastructure of the salon will not be less than a high class salon and it will be known as the compatible and reasonable salon across the New York City (Cool Schendel, 2010). Competitor Analysis There are a number of salons available of various sizes in New York while none of them carry the similar idea as compared to the New Look Salon has invented. Major competitors of New Look salon will be New NYC Hair Salon, Sorayahs Salon Services, FourStar Salon Services, etc. All of these are ranked under the three to five start rating of the salon services. New Look Salon is introducing their salon below these ratings but their services are not less than the services offered in these big standards salons (Scarborough, 2015). In order to gain the competitive advantage, organization will perform the competitor analysis in relation to gain the relevant information of the strategies implemented by them for attracting the consumers. After reviewing those strategies, organization will develop some unique strategies in order to beat its competitors as well as through which organization could attain the adequate outcomes (Renton, et. al., 2015). Description of the Management team New Look Salon is not a big or multinational level organization; it is introducing the salon services for the first time and with a small professional team in order to provide adequate salon services to the medium income group of people. This is the idea invented by them for gaining the more number of consumers as New Look Salons infrastructure, products, services and the professionals will be of optimum quality but in order to provide the experience of high class salon to the less income group people, New Look Salon has adopted this strategy. Management team of the organization is having three members including the one owner. It is a small management team and other two persons are investors as well as the member of management team who takes the decision on the behalf of the organization in order to develop its distinctive image in the competitive salon industry (Pardalos Tsitsiringos, 2013). Plan of Operations Under this step of the business plan, according to the organizational capabilities, goals and objectives will be developed in order to attain the growth in the particular industry. All the functionalities which will be operated in the New Look Salon business will be executed in an adequate manner so that the possibility of their failure decreases and the chances of success rise. Under the plan of operations, from the process of planning till the process of raising funds and the promotion of the business idea are analysed and ranked on their importance basis. After this process, execution of the several strategies and the plans takes places in order to develop the identity in the new market (Lam Harker, 2015). Financial Forecast The major objective of the New Look Salon is to deploy their services in the New York City and behind these objective, certain resources are needs to be arranges such as professionals for salon services, funds to operate the activities, office, infrastructure for the salon, etc. In order to fulfil these objectives, organization will require funds and for raising funds, organization has two investors and apart from those investors, loans, advances, etc. are some sources available with the organization for raising funds to operate its activities. The basic expenses of the organization will be the start-up cost i.e. expenses on leasing of land, infrastructure, and office supplies, legal certificate to operate business activities, hiring of professionals, promotional and the advertisement expenses, etc. will be included in the start-up cost and these will be high costs as they are relevance with the setting up the business (Hill, Jones Schilling, 2014). Apart from this, New Look salon may appoint an investment analyst who can guide them in order to raise the funds as well as to attain the objectives for the organization. Along with these expenses, it is expected that a minimum of 25% growth will be easily attainable in the New York City with this idea of start-up and this rate of growth is quite attractive (Baker, 2014). Loan or Investment Proposal New Look Salon is starting up their business at the small level with approximate 5-7 customers attainability capacity. In order to expand the business in future, management may opt for the loan or search the investors through showing their business capability as well as the financial statements of the previous accounting years. At the initial period, organization may arrange certain capital from the loan or through other resources otherwise all the initial requirements will be fulfilled through the internal sources of funds only (Armstrong, et. al., 2015). Conclusion This report concludes the various aspects of developing a business plan and under this report, business plan for New Look Salon was discussed in order to develop their presence in the New York City. Initially, the business activities will be operated at small level but after reviewing the response from the public of New York City, it will be expanded as per the demand. Hence, for this purpose, vision and mission in relation with the New Look Salon, profile of the business, strategies opted to gain the success, marketing strategy, etc. components of the business plan were discussed. Biography of Babe Ruth, Home Run King
Biography of Babe Ruth, Home Run King Babe Ruth (February 6, 1895ââ¬âAugust 16, 1948) is often referred to as the greatest baseball player who ever lived. In 22 seasons, Ruth hit a record 714 home runs. Many of his numerous records for both pitching and hitting lasted for decades. Ruth won many honors during and after his baseball career, including being named to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team and the Major League Baseball All-Time Team. In 1936, Ruth was among the first five inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Georges parents worked long hours running a bar, and so little George ran the streets of Baltimore, Maryland getting into trouble. When Ruth was 7 years old, his parents sent their incorrigible son to St. Marys Industrial School for Boys. With only a few exceptions, George lived at this reformatory school until he was 19 years old. Learns to Play Baseball It was at St. Marys that George Ruth developed into a good baseball player. Although George was a natural as soon as he stepped onto the baseball field, it was Brother Matthias, the prefect of discipline at St. Marys, who helped George fine-tune his skills. The New Babe By the time George Ruth was 19, he had drawn the eyes of minor league recruiter Jack Dunn. Jack liked the way George pitched and so he signed him to the Baltimore Orioles for $600. George was ecstatic to get paid to play the game he loved. There are several stories about how George Ruth got his nickname Babe. The most popular is that Dunn was often finding new recruits and so when George Ruth showed up at practice, another player called out, hes one of Dunnies babes, which eventually was just shortened to Babe. Jack Dunn was great at finding talented baseball players, but he was losing money. After only five months with the Orioles, Dunn sold Ruth to the Boston Red Sox on July 10, 1914. The Red Sox Although now in the major leagues, Ruth didnt get to play much in the beginning. Ruth was even sent to play for the Grays, a minor league team, for a few months. It was during this first season in Boston that Ruth met and fell in love with the young waitress Helen Woodford, who worked at a local coffee shop. The two married in October 1914. By 1915, Ruth was back with the Red Sox and pitching. Over the next few seasons, Ruths pitching went from great to extraordinary. In 1918, Ruth pitched his 29th scoreless inning in a World Series. That record stood for 43 years. Things changed in 1919 because Ruth demanded to spend more time hitting and thus less time pitching. That season, Ruth set a new record by hitting 29 home runs. The House That Ruth Built Many were surprised when it was announced in 1920 that Ruth had been traded to the New York Yankees for a whopping $125,000 (more than twice the amount ever paid for a player). Ruth was an extremely popular baseball player, and he seemed to succeed at everything on the field. In 1920, he broke his own home run record and hit an amazing 54 home runs in one season. The following season, he eclipsed his own mark with 59 home runs. Fans flocked to see the amazing Ruth in action. Ruth drew in so many fans that when the new Yankee Stadium was built in 1923, many called it The House That Ruth Built. In 1927, Ruth was part of the team that many consider the best baseball team in history. It was during that year that he hit 60 home runs in a season - a mark that stood for 34 years. Living the Wild Life There are nearly as many stories of Ruth off the field as there are on it. Some people described Ruth as a boy that never really grew up; while others just considered him vulgar. Ruth loved practical jokes. He frequently stayed out late, completely ignoring team curfews. He loved to drink, ate copious amounts of food, and slept with a large number of women. He often used profanities and loved to drive his car fast. More than a couple of times, Ruth crashed his car. His wild life put him at odds with many of his teammates and definitely with the teams manager. It also greatly affected his relationship with his wife Helen. Since they were Catholic, neither Ruth nor Helen believed in divorce. However, by 1925 Ruth and Helen were permanently separated, with their adopted daughter living with Helen. When Helen died in a house fire in 1929, Ruth married model Claire Merritt Hodgson, who tried to help Ruth curb some of his worst habits. Popular Stories One of the most famous stories about Ruth involves a home run and a boy in the hospital. In 1926, Ruth heard about an 11-year-old boy named Johnny Sylvester who was in the hospital after an accident. The doctors werent sure if Johnny was going to live. Ruth promised to hit a home run for Johnny. In the next game, Ruth not only hit one home run, he hit three. Johnny, upon hearing the news of Ruths home runs, started to feel better. Ruth later went to the hospital and visited Johnny in person. Another famous story about Ruth is one of the most famous stories of baseball history. During the third game of the 1932 World Series, the Yankees were in a heated competition with the Chicago Cubs. When Ruth stepped up to the plate, Cubs players heckled him and some fans even threw fruit at him. After two balls and two strikes, the incensed Ruth pointed out to center field. With the next pitch, Ruth struck the ball exactly where he had predicted in what has been termed the called shot. The story became immensely popular; however, its not exactly clear whether Ruth meant to call his shot or was just pointing at the pitcher. The 1930s The 1930s showed an aging Ruth. He was already 35 years old and although he was still playing well, younger players were playing better. What Ruth wanted to do was manage. Unfortunately for him, his wild life had caused even the most adventurous team owner to consider Ruth unsuitable to manage an entire team. In 1935, Ruth decided to switch teams and play for the Boston Braves with the hope of having a chance to be assistant manager. When that didnt work out, Ruth decided to retire. On May 25, 1935, Ruth hit his 714th career home run. Five days later, he played his last game of major league baseball. (Ruths home run record stood until broken by Hank Aaron in 1974.) Retirement and Death Ruth didnt stay idle in retirement. He traveled, played a lot of golf, went bowling, hunted, visited sick children in hospitals, and played in numerous exhibition games. In 1936, Ruth was chosen to be one of the first five inductees to the newly created Baseball Hall of Fame. In November 1946, Ruth entered a hospital after suffering a monstrous pain above his left eye for a few months. The doctors told him he had cancer. He underwent surgery but not all of it was removed. The cancer soon grew back. Ruth died on August 16, 1948, at age 53. This list includes everything from MCAT prep books to grislybut educational!books about the darker side of medical history. Weââ¬â¢ve also included works that introduce you to some of the social and ethical complexities of medicine, too. Not only will these books widen your perspective on the field of medicine, theyââ¬â¢ll also help you become a better doctor. Book #1: The Butchering Art: Joseph Lister's Quest to Transform the Grisly World of Victorian Medicine by Lindsey Fitzharris Winner of the 2018 PEN/E.O. Wilson Prize for Literary Science Writing, Fitzharrisââ¬â¢ book takes readers into the dark world of Victorian medical science. Up until the mid-Victorian period, surgery was often tantamount to a death sentence. Doctors didnââ¬â¢t wash their hands or their instruments, the surgical operating theatre was open to spectators, and post-operative infection was considered a good thing! That all changed thanks to Joseph Lister, a British surgeon who pioneered the field of germ theory. Fitzharris gives readers a glimpse into the bloody history of medicine in Victorian England and traces Listerââ¬â¢s journey to change the field of surgical medicine. The Butchering Art is equal parts gruesome and fascinating, and we guarantee that you wonââ¬â¢t be able to put it down. Actually, if you canââ¬â¢t get enough of the morbid history of medicine after reading Lindsey Fitzharrisââ¬â¢ book, donââ¬â¢t worry! We also recommend Quackery: A Brief History of the Worst Ways to Cure Everything by Lydia Kangwhich explores the worst malpractices of medical historyand The Anatomy Murders by Lisa Rosner, which tells the story of medical body snatching and how it led to Englandââ¬â¢s first recorded serial killers. These books are guaranteed to help you understand the history of medicine better...and they might keep you up at night, too. Book #2:The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee, MD, PhD When a book wins a Pulitzer Prize, you know itââ¬â¢s a good read. Thatââ¬â¢s definitely the case for The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee, which provides a ââ¬Å"biographyâ⬠of cancer. Mukherjee traces the history of the disease all the way from its appearance thousands of years ago to today, and in doing so, helps readers better understand cancer as a disease. He also spends time looking at modern cancer treatment and talking about the future of cancer research, which will bring you up to speed on critical advancements in your future field. No matter what type of medicine you want to practice, cancer is the specter that haunts them all. Having a better understanding of the history and future of the disease will not only better prepare you to face it in your own medical career, but it will help you understand how to best support your patients who face such a scary diagnosis. Mukherjeeââ¬â¢s sharp writing style makes this book a page turner that you donââ¬â¢t want to miss! (And once youââ¬â¢re done, you can watch the documentary, which was directed by none other than Ken Burns.) Book #3:Med School Uncensored by Richard Beddingfield, MD Now that weââ¬â¢ve given you two fascinating books about the history (and future!) of medicine, itââ¬â¢s time to turn to more traditional pre-med fare. Thatââ¬â¢s why weââ¬â¢ve chosen Med School Uncensored by Dr. Richard Beddingfield, which is an entertaining, pull-no-punches insider look at medical school. Med School Uncensored is definitely required reading for every pre-med student! If youââ¬â¢re looking for even more insider knowledge about the medical school experience after you finish Med School Uncensored, you can also check out Med School Confidential by Robert H. Miller and Daniel M. Bissell, MD. It also gives you a peek behind the proverbial curtain. Even though it was published more than ten years ago, Med School Confidential offers great time-tested advice about the med school process and covers everything from applying to medical schools to finding the perfect job after earning your white coat. Book #5: Being Mortal by Atul Gawande If you havenââ¬â¢t heard of Atul Gawande, youââ¬â¢re missing out: heââ¬â¢s a surgeon at Brigham and Womenââ¬â¢s Hospital in Boston, teaches at Harvard Medical School, and is a New York Times best-selling author. Basically, heââ¬â¢s a rockstar. All of his books about medicineincluding The Checklist Manifesto and Complicationsare worth reading, but for our money, Being Mortal is the book that no pre-med student should miss. And the critics agree: not only was Being Mortal voted one of the best books of 2017 by...well, basically everyone, it also spent a staggering 85 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. So like we said, itââ¬â¢s definitely a book thatââ¬â¢s worth your time. Being Mortal deals with one of the hardest aspects of medicine: end-of-life care. It can be hard for doctors, whose job it is to fight off death every day, to realize when itââ¬â¢s best to stop treating the illness and start giving palliative care. Gawande explores how the American medical system deals with aging and the inevitable illness that comes with it, and he argues that medical treatment should focus on how patients want to live rather than just extending life, especially in terminal circumstances. As a pre-med student, youââ¬â¢re going to school to become a doctor and save lives. But Gawandeââ¬â¢s book shows young, aspiring doctors that their job is about more than preserving lifeitââ¬â¢s about giving quality of life, too. Being Mortal will transform the way you think about dying, and it will definitely change the way you practice medicine. Book #6: Ask Me About My Uterus by Abby Norman Abby Norman had her whole life ahead of her: as a bright young student, she had just started attending Sarah Lawrence College. But everything ground to a halt when she woke up one day in excruciating abdominal pain. Ask Me About My Uterus is Abbyââ¬â¢s memoir about her eight-year journey from the onset of her illness to getting a firm diagnosis. This book gives readers a patientââ¬â¢s perspective on the medical system, especially when it comes to treating women. Norman explains that doctors rarely take womenââ¬â¢s pain seriously: in fact, when women report being in pain, they are more likely to be prescribed sedatives than pain killers than men who complain of similar symptoms. As she walks through her experience, she also researches the history of medicine and exposes how often itââ¬â¢s biased against women. As a future doctor, itââ¬â¢s important for you to understand how medicine, even as it works to help and heal, isnââ¬â¢t immune from prejudice. The only way to combat this is for up-and-coming doctors (like you!) to understand how the current medical system falls short. And thatââ¬â¢s why we picked Normanââ¬â¢s book for our list. Not only will Ask Me About My Uterus help you better understand what itââ¬â¢s like to be a patient with a chronic, undiagnosed illness, it will also open your eyes to the gender biases of the medical field. Book #7: Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth Okay, okay. This book isnââ¬â¢t technically about medicine. Instead, Grit is a book about how passion and perseverance, rather than raw talent or achievement, is the key to long-term success. More importantly, Grit teaches readers how to push through challenges and setbacks to reach your goals. So why have we decided to give Duckworthââ¬â¢s book a place on our list? Itââ¬â¢s simple: medical school is hard. (And thatââ¬â¢s an understatement!) Thereââ¬â¢s no coasting through classes, and most students will find themselves struggling at some point. This can be really hard for medical students, are often ambitious and high achieving. And thatââ¬â¢s a good thing! But you also need to learn how to push through adversity and hardship if youââ¬â¢re going to make it in medical school. In her book, Duckworth shows readers how to cultivate perseverancewhat she calls ââ¬Å"gritâ⬠which is what allows people to handle adversity and learn from their mistakes. She also gives helpful tips for developing tenacity, and how to use failure as a springboard toward your goals. By developing a little more grit, youââ¬â¢ll be better prepared to tackle any obstacle med school throws your way! Whatââ¬â¢s Next? Now that youââ¬â¢ve got these books under your belt, take some time learning more about what it means to be ââ¬Å"pre-med,â⬠and what that means for getting into medical school. Human Resource Management Autonomy, Data Collection, and Job Descriptions - Research Paper Example n of the basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, as defined in Self-Determination Theory, has been identified as an important predictor of individualsââ¬â¢ optimal functioning in various life domains.ââ¬â¢ (Broeck, Vansteenkiste, Witte, Soenens & Lens, 2010) Thus autonomy yields a positive attitude towards life and work resulting in improved performance and low employee turnover in an organization. According to the latest issue of TIME magazine, the CEO of Apple Tim Cook sets the example of giving autonomy to his team thus motivating them to be more responsible and productive ââ¬ËCook knows that his commitment to excellence is inseparable from the incredible ensemble at Apple.ââ¬â¢ (Gore 2012) The collection of job analysis information is done through questionnaires, interviews and observation. The interview process gives detailed in-depth information helpful in the formation of job description. The observation method provides chances of any required amendments in the job description based on the personalized analysis of the employee and his ability to perform his tasks. ââ¬ËIt is important to analyze specific issues for job analysis information.ââ¬â¢ (Condrey 2010) In order to understand the specific issues, the methods are also used in combination with each other in order to provide a better platform for structuring the job description for the employees . Juvenile Court System Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Juvenile Court System - Essay Example Most of them have mental health and substance abuse problems and have not committed violent offenses. Historically, the key function of the juvenile court system was to act in the best interests of the child. In particular, young offenders were entitled to counsel, to be silent in interrogations and to face their accusers. However, the recent research indicates that the effectiveness of the juvenile court system has significantly decreased due to its continual transformation into adult court system. The juvenile court is more than a court. In addition to judges, probation officers, social workers, mental health professionals, parents and educators are involved into process. The process of maturity is not easy for children and they should be provides with intervention and protections from society. The mission of the juvenile courts is to become the center of rehabilitation and protection for young offenders (Jacob 2003). Most of the young offenders do not commit the serious crimes, but they still violate the state of federal law which if committed by the adult would constitute the crime (Rubin 1996). For many years, the society is struggling to decrease the level of juvenile criminal activities and is trying to identify what motivates the youth to commit crimes. The juvenile court system was intended to address the underlining causes of criminal activity and take the corrective actions. Advantages of Juvenile Court System The effective intervention strategies have developed and integrated into Juvenile Court System despite of the significant problems presented by the young offenders. From the personal perspective, young offenders experience numerous educational and psychological problems. The emotional and economic factors have the significant impact on their criminal involvement. From the epidemiological perspective, young offenders have high percentage of arrests for serious crimes (especially boys). From social perspective, antisocial juveniles as the participants of the child mental and education programs cause enormous governmental resources. In overall, the existing corrective programs for young individuals are effective. Traditional approaches of Juvenile Court System include psychodynamic, humanistic and behavioral (Borduin 1994). In some judicial districts, antisocial young people are referred to the mental health centers for individual psychotherapy where they can receive the individual counseling from the juvenile court representatives. In the middle 1990s, juvenile courts referred an increasing number of delinquent youth for outpatient family therapy as the part of their probation and this tendency has remained today. Peer and family interventions have proved to be high effective in reducing delinquent behavior as well. The so-called multisystemic therapy is the home-based treatment approach including the commitment to maintaining children at home, time-limiting and goal-orienting treatment plans. Unlike pure family intervention approach of juvenile courts, multisystemic therapy is more effective in addressing and reducing the causal models of delinquent behavior (Borduin 1994). The therapy's purpose is to understand the relation between the identified problems and broader systemic context.
